The Ghosts of Chingle Hall: England’s Haunted Manor

Hidden in the quiet countryside of Goosnargh, Lancashire, Chingle Hall is a small but infamous medieval manor known for its intense paranormal activity. Built in 1260, it has a long and eerie history, with connections to religious persecution, mysterious deaths, and alleged supernatural encounters.

A Dark and Mysterious Past

Originally called Singleton Hall, Chingle Hall was the birthplace of John Wall, a Catholic priest who was executed in 1679 during the persecution of Catholics. The house itself was a secret place of worship for Catholics during a time when their faith was outlawed in England. Hidden priest holes—small secret rooms where priests hid from authorities—were built within the hall, adding to its chilling history.

Over the centuries, many have claimed that Chingle Hall is haunted by restless spirits, including those of persecuted priests, former residents, and even ghostly children.

Ghostly Encounters and Paranormal Activity

The Ghost of John Wall: One of the most famous spirits said to haunt Chingle Hall is that of Father John Wall, the Catholic priest who was hanged, drawn, and quartered. His apparition has been seen walking the hallways, and visitors have reported sudden cold spots, whispering voices, and even the smell of incense—as if a ghostly mass is still being held.

Mysterious Monks: Dark, hooded shadowy figures, believed to be monks, have been spotted wandering the grounds. Some visitors claim they hear chanting or feel a strange presence when near the priest holes where clergymen once hid from capture.

The Lady in White: A mysterious female ghost, often described as a Lady in White, has been seen standing near the old moat or wandering the bedrooms. Some believe she was a former resident of the hall who died under tragic circumstances.

The Crying Children: In several rooms, guests have reported hearing faint cries or giggles from unseen children. Some paranormal investigators believe these could be the spirits of children who lived—and possibly died—at Chingle Hall centuries ago.

Poltergeist Activity

Beyond apparitions, Chingle Hall is notorious for objects moving on their own, doors slamming shut, and furniture shifting overnight. Some visitors claim they have been pushed, scratched, or even felt hands grabbing them in the darkness.

Investigations and Paranormal Research

Over the years, ghost hunters, psychics, and paranormal researchers have explored Chingle Hall. Many report capturing EVPs (electronic voice phenomena), unexplained orbs, and eerie shadows in their photographs. Some investigations have even left seasoned paranormal experts too frightened to return.
