Ghosts of Bodie: Spirits in California’s Famous Gold Rush Ghost Town

Tucked away in the hills east of the Sierra Nevada lies Bodie, California a once-booming gold mining town now preserved in a state of “arrested decay.” While time has stood still in its creaking wooden buildings and dusty streets, many believe that the spirits of Bodie’s past residents never truly left.
A Town Born from Gold and Greed
Founded in the mid-1800s, Bodie flourished after a major gold discovery in 1876. At its peak, it housed nearly 10,000 residents, saloons on every corner, and all the chaos that comes with a lawless frontier town. Violence, disease, mining accidents, and harsh winters contributed to a high mortality rate planting the seeds for the town’s haunted reputation.
When the gold dried up, so did the town’s prosperity. By the 1940s, Bodie was a ghost town in the literal sense empty of the living, but not necessarily of the dead.
